Why Do I Keep Getting Calls From Unknown Numbers?

Repeated calls from unknown numbers can be frustrating, especially when they arrive during work or family time. There are several possible explanations, and not every unfamiliar call is a scam.

Common reasons for repeated calls
Your number may have been shared with a business when you entered a contest, requested a quote, or signed up for a service. Some companies use legitimate marketing lists. Other calls may come from automated dialling systems, survey companies, debt collection agencies, or scammers.

In some cases, callers use number spoofing, which makes the displayed caller ID misleading. That means the number shown on your phone may belong to an unrelated person or business.

How to reduce unwanted calls
Use your phone’s built-in call-screening or silence-unknown-callers feature if it suits your needs. Check your mobile provider’s spam protection options. Be careful when giving your number to websites, competitions, and online forms, and review marketing consent settings when available.

Canada’s National Do Not Call List can reduce some telemarketing calls, but it does not block every type of call and exceptions apply. It also cannot stop criminals who ignore the rules.

Should you answer?
If you are expecting a call from a doctor, delivery driver, employer, or service provider, an unknown number may be legitimate. Letting the call go to voicemail can help you decide whether to respond. Do not call back a suspicious number just because it rang several times.

Check the pattern
Search the number on CallCheck.ca and compare any available reports. Look at the reported call type and dates, and remember that caller ID can be spoofed.

If calls include threats, fraud attempts, or repeated harassment, keep a record and consider reporting them to the appropriate Canadian authorities or your phone provider.
